Experience Bernard Darwin’s Favourite Course on Aberdovey Golf Breaks

ABERDOVEY

Station Road, Aberdyfi, Aberdovey LL35 0RT

All those familiar with the work of famous amateur golfer and foremost golf writer of the early 20th century, Bernard Darwin, will know something of Aberdovey golf course before even setting foot upon these fabled links. For this is the place that Darwin, grandson of Charles, author of seminal works on golf such as “Golf Courses of The British Isles” and captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, described as the place his “…soul loved best of all the courses in the world.”

It is praise indeed from a man who played a few rounds here and there across the United Kingdom, but as those who’ve already taken to this glorious course will doubtless agree, Darwin’s prose in praise of the Aberdovey links are truly well-deserved.

A Course Much Loved through the Ages

To begin, the classical links to be discovered at Aberdovey rest gently in the folded edges of Snowdonia National Park at the mouth of the Dovey Estuary, a location suffused with such wild romance that you don’t need to be an esteemed golf journalist to appreciate the splendour.

This dog-leg strip of land spun out between the sandy shore of the Irish Sea and the solid shoulder of the Cambrian Mountains behind is a very special place. Aberdovey golf course is where former world no.1 Ian Woosnam chose to come each early spring to prepare for the U.S Masters.

As peaceful and majestic as the surroundings here undoubtedly are, Aberdovey golf course is no push-over, and those who come to test these links are advised to resist being lulled by their sense of tranquillity.

Restful Surroundings, Testing Links

Golf has been played here for some 130 years, and in that time, Herbert Fowler, James Braid and Harry Colt have all played their part in the evolution of this natural links land.

The narrow, out-and-back layout, running in a figure-of-eight, rarely relieves the risk of carrying a ball into punishing rough, especially when the wind blows, which it frequently does here. Greens are fast and firm, with the exposed plateau perching above the beach on the par-3 12th (played from below over a rugged slope) providing a highlight, and view, that captures the essence of Aberdovey for many visiting links enthusiasts.

Back in the clubhouse, the food is hearty, the welcome warm, and for those enjoying an Aberdovey golf break, it’s the perfect place to relax and look out upon a course still much-loved for offering charm and challenge in equal measure.
