Golf Where It Began

The Fife Golfing Association encompassed over fifty clubs in the modestly-sized area of east Scotland, many of them household names of the golfing world. At the region’s epicentre, of course, lies St Andrews, and the world-famous “home of golf” has a gravitational pull all of its own. The Old Course here is, quite simply, the oldest golf course in the world. The first recorded rounds here date back to 1552 (when Mary Queen of Scots was still a child). It is this very course on which the 18-hole version of the game was born, and it is entirely appropriate that this standard-bearer of modern golf was chosen as the 2022 venue for the 150th Open Championship.

However, it can often take more skill and resolve to book a tee time for the Old Course as it does to play through it, so it’s worth remembering that the St Andrews Links Trust curates a further six fine public links courses in and around the “Auld Grey Toon”.
