Berwick-on-Tweed boasts one of the jewels in the region’s crown, Goswick Golf Club. Just six miles south of this attractive seaside town, you’ll find this lovely set of links laid out in two loops through the dunes on either side of the clubhouse.
Yet this is only one of several sensational courses modestly residing here in Northumberland, ready to be enjoyed on a North East golf tour. England’s most northerly and least populated county offers coastal golf that retains the sense of splendid, wild and windswept isolation that disappeared decades ago from many of the UK’s most notable and popular links golf clubs.
Head a few miles further south to find the excellent Bamburgh Castle golf club, often cited as one of Britain’s most scenic courses, with views of the castle and across the water to Lindisfarne. While enjoying the vista from the first four holes, following the shoreline and looking out to the holy island, it’s worth remembering that even Lindisfarne had its own nine-hole golf course up until the 1960s — testament to how popular the game has always been in this part of England. Even today, you’ll find over forty member clubs in the Northumberland Union of Golf Clubs, and together they provide a healthy variety of parkland golf and links.
