On the shores of Northumberland, behind a beach frequently listed as one of the loveliest in the world, on the shoulder of a castle regarded as one of Britain’s most magnificent, lies unsurprisingly, one of England’s most spectacularly situated golf courses.
‘There is surely no lovelier view from any golf course’ Bruce Darwin wrote emphatically, and in the century since, nothing here has changed to make that assertion any less true. Located an hour north of Newcastle, Bamburgh Castle Golf Club is often lauded for possessing the most scenic set of holes in England, if not the UK, and most who’ve stepped out for a round here would have to agree.

The scenery surrounding Bamburgh castle golf course unfurls its way beyond majestic and spectacular, to become thoroughly distracting, as Darwin once again noted.
‘I imagine that the golfer’s eye must be more often taken off the ball at Bamburgh than on any other course,’ he declared, ‘the views are so compellingly beautiful that we really have to look, no matter how critical the shot.’
Above it all, Bamburgh Castle, one of Britain’s finest coastal fortresses towers on sheer rock over acres of pristine sands, a sentinel staring across the sea to Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, and the Cheviots. It’s hard not to do the same.
However, the course here, lying on the northern outskirts of the equally charming village of Bamburgh, is of a quality that demands appreciation and concentration. Aside from the stunning 360˚ view, the clifftop land here has also served to create some truly excellent holes.

Bamburgh Castle Golf Club was founded in 1904 by Lord Armstrong, whose family seat is the neighbouring castle. A diminutive (by today’s standards) 5,621-yard par-68, the course has remained virtually unaltered. Dramatic elevation changes create much of the excitement and challenge here, and from its first few holes, Bamburgh castle golf course proves as unique as its setting.
For instance, very few courses begin with a pair of par-3s immediately followed by a brace of par-5s, but Bamburgh is a sporting course, the likes of which are no longer made. Each par-3 here offers a different challenge, and the combination of stunning sea views coupled with some cliff-edge greens, seems contrived to keep everyone on their toes.
Bamburgh Castle golf course is one of those venues that should, if at all possible, be visited at least once by devotees of the game. Beyond the 18th, the generously glazed, pavilion-style clubhouse offers a truly warm welcome, and even more of that entirely fabulous panorama.
