It’s an understatement to say that the links courses found the length of Fife brim with history. Still, it is also refreshing to know that, despite their deep significance in the story of golf, not all clubs are dedicated to the sole task of preserving themselves for posterity.
The Crail Golfing Society may have formed in 1786, but there’s no doubt they understand that the continuation of tradition must often be underpinned by innovation and progress. With that in mind, welcome to the Craighead links at the historic Crail Golf Club, a place where ancient and modern blend harmoniously to create something truly exceptional.
Golfing devotees have long come to play the original Balcomie course here at Crail Golf Club. Visitor levels had become almost unsustainably high during the 1990s, yet rather than reducing numbers, the club took the assured and farsighted decision to purchase 114 acres of adjoining land and build a second 18-hole course here from scratch.

Trusting the New
Even braver in many eyes was Crail Golf Club’s decision to commission the (at the time) unknown American golf course architect, Gil Hanse. Today Hanse is noted for such high-profile projects as designing the golf course for the 2016 Olympics, but as his first independent commission, the Craighead golf course certainly helped seal his reputation.
The challenge of lending a modern interpretation to traditional Scottish links has been accepted in style, creating a course that delivers a truly unique golfing experience. Blending clifftop golf with links, Craighead now hosts international championships (such as the World Junior Open in 2000). The course cleverly incorporates features such as Danes Dike, a 9th-century defensive stone wall left by the Vikings, which now comes into play on four holes, an old WWI defence post and sites of special scientific interest.

Fresh Challenge from Ancient Features
With a sea view from every hole, the course can be played from four sets of tees (extending to 6,722 yards when played from the red tees farthest back) and provides a true test of golfing skill. No two consecutive holes play in the same direction here, and although mainly residing over the clifftop, the course has been laid free of cover in a traditional links manner, making the wind a constant factor.
There’s challenge from the 2nd, a near 90° dogleg with deep bunkers and a fiercely sloping green, drama along the cliff edge down the 14th, and a blind approach created by the Viking wall on the 15th.
Taken as a whole, the Craighead course at Crail Golf Club is a wonderful example of what happens when fresh eyes look at ancient land and create a truly unique golfing experience.
