Enjoy Breathtaking Coastal Golf on Dunbar Golf Tours

DUNBAR

East Links, Dunbar, East Lothian, EH42 1LL

Regardless of the profusion of golfing opportunities found along Scotland’s Golf Coast and the many other world-famous golf courses near Dunbar, most links enthusiasts will agree that no trip to East Lothian is complete without a round played at Dunbar.

Golf has been played here at Dunbar for over 400 years, and the Dunbar Golfing Society is one of the game’s oldest recorded organisations. Picturesque Dunbar was once a major garrison town, and Dunbar Golf Club was established here by gentlemen of the military in 1856. Ground was cleared, and the original course underwent much alteration and adjustment by revered greats such as Old Tom Morris, from 1922 to 24. James Braid and Ben Sayers laid the backbone of the course played today.

This famous golf course near Dunbar, set on the western edge of the town, lies only a few hundred yards from the home of renowned 19th-century naturalist and conservationist John Muir. Take a Dunbar golf tour to these spectacular links, and you’ll drink in the same extraordinary coastal scenery that likely inspired the man who became one of the world’s first environmentalists.

Course Testimonials

Dunbar15th Hole

A Narrow Stretch of Outstanding Beauty

The course interweaves uniquely as it follows an often perilously narrow strip of land (at one point no broader than 20 yards) with splendid sea views ever-present from this slightly elevated ground. On the inland side, the huge stone wall of the adjoining deer park borders the course. Flanking the entire length of the excellent par-4 6th, this old red wall is often in play just off fairways and greens. There are magnificent views of the Barns Ness Lighthouse and the striking islet of Bass Rock. When heading for home, the holes cling to the very edge of the rocky shore. The old stone boathouse inhabiting the 14th makes a picture postcard, with distant Dunbar in view beyond the water.

Unsurprisingly this well-set gem of a Scottish links course has been earmarked by discerning golfers for decades. It has been engaged as a final qualifying course for the Open when played at nearby Muirfield, hosted the Scottish PGA, British Ladies, British Boys, and interestingly the first PGA Championship on the European Tour, back in 1968.

A Test of Accuracy and Courage

At not much more than 6,500 yards, Dunbar golf links is a compact course with well-rounded challenges and precariously narrow strips between the deer park wall and stony beach. The holes are well contoured, and the swirling sea wind adds extra jeopardy, creating links on which only skill, bravery and clever shot-making will see you safely through.

While in East Lothian, a Dunbar golf tour is a must for any links player who values these virtues, or for that matter, anyone who enjoys playing precision golf in perfect surroundings.
