Imagine lush green links curving around a crescent of sand, set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, recently voted the best stretch of coastline in Britain. The sea sparkles to the east, and on the course’s southern edge stands the remarkable, dramatic profile of a mediaeval, 14th-century castle.
Welcome to Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club, a course waiting to be discovered in the most glorious of settings, laid out behind the sands of Emberton Bay on the wild and wonderful Northumberland coast.
If it sounds almost too good to be true, things actually get better. For these splendid links were designed by the five-time Open winner and legendary golf course architect James Braid.
There’s been a 9-hole course on this marvellous spot since 1900, but when, in 1919, the shipping magnate Sir Arthur Munro Sunderland bought Dunstanburgh Castle and the surrounding estate encompassing the course, he eagerly summoned Braid to extend and reshape the links. Executed in three stages, three holes at a time, the improved links were completed as 18-holes by 1936, and thus the course remained for the next half-century.

However, despite their undoubted beauty and charm, the 18-holes here barely breached 5,000 yards, and so in 1987, Sir Arthur’s son, William, decided it was finally time to bring the course at Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club up to speed with the modern game.
He undertook major work to create a total of ten holes with great care and patience. Heavy earth lifting was kept to a bare minimum to preserve the essential character of the links. Instead, many new greens were created by painstakingly grooming and trimming parts of the existing ground, gradually reducing the cut until the turf was of sufficient quality.

Today the course remains splendidly situated between castle and sand, shouldering the broad dunes before the beach, but is now extended to 6,263 yards from the back tees. Still modest by current standards, it’s no surprise these links offer only one par-5 (the 14th).
Instead, the joy of this course is derived from the challenges of shorter play, such as the devilish 4th, a par-3 played into the wind to a tiny, raised green. All the greens here are in the finest condition, and many are deviously contoured. There’s variety, carefully contrived to entertain, but the view from every hole is consistently superb.
All-in-all, Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club offers a course that, once visited, most links enthusiasts feel delighted to have discovered.
