Enjoy Unique and Historic Links on Elie Golf Tours

ELIE

Golf Club Lane, Earlsferry, Elie, Leven KY9 1AS

The “Kingdom of Fife” has much to offer when it comes to extraordinary, historic golf links, and Elie Golf Club, situated just a few kilometres east of Leven and Lundin Links, is no exception. Here on the northern shore of the Firth of Forth, you’ll find the world’s third-oldest links course, preceded only by St. Andrews Old Course and Musselburgh, with a charter to play here dating back to 1589.

Were that not sufficient to make these links of serious golfing significance, they also reside directly behind the charming coastal town of Earlsferry and Elie, once the modest home of ploughman’s son, five-times Open winner, and legendary golf architect, James Braid.

it's a nice course that is much cheaper than the other big name golf courses around St.Andrews, with a fine view across the Firth of Forth, there is one very much nearly unknown attraction that might have escaped your attention: a fully working Periscope from an old submarine, that is housed within the starter and shop shed. Well worth having a look over the bay, maybe you see some dolphins or an Alien Spaceship 🛸 🤔😂😂😂

One of the best, most unique and understated courses I've played in the area! Even without a par 5 and with only two par 3s there is great variety of holes, tricky approaches and testing winds... All with a fantastic view! Links Golf is real golf!

Awesome course with epics views of the scottish terrain and oceanside - especially on the back 9. Probably one of the easier courses in the region, but its no pushover. Had a great experience hitting a second shot off the beach on one of the back 9 holes - felt like golf heaven.

My son and came to St Andrews and Fife to celebrate my 70th birthday. We played Elie Golf House on our first golf day of six rounds including the Old Course. From the moment we walked up the driveway we knew it was going to be a special day. The starter came out to greet us and really made it feel special. It has a little quirky driving range and warm up area. We knew about the periscope in the starter house but you have to see it to appreciate it. Starting with the incredible blind drive over the first fairway hill it was on. The first 2 holes are on the back of the property. When you get onto the second green you are up on a high ridge overlooking the entire course all the way to the beach and it’s stunning. The course is a fantastic links layout , the 3rd oldest course in the world. The conditions were amazing and the course set up is gracious. We had a beautifully prepared dinner in the dining room. The service a food was absolutely five star. Every thing about this experience is very laid back cool. The best golf day of my life. Oh and we both played exceptionally well. Thanks to everyone at Elie Golf House

It’s just a stunning links. I’ve played a lot of good courses but few can compare with the setting of Elie - which makes sense of the whole history of “links” golf - as it rolls down on beautiful land linking the old town with the sea. The stretch right alongside the beach is fantastic, but there’s hardly a weak hole and the whole experience is wonderful. Visitor green fees have got expensive but we went out late on a twilight round and it was pretty reasonable - and the best time to enjoy the course.

Heavenly golf course, in tremendous condition in the midst of winter (16/02/26). All staff very friendly, welcoming and helpful. If you’re considering visiting Elie, JUST DO IT!

Elie

The Course Where a Master Learned His Craft

Born here in 1870, Braid won his first local tournament at only eight years of age, and as his golfing passion and talents grew, so did Elie golf course. The course started as nine holes and gradually expanded to eleven, then fourteen. The other Scottish master of golf design, Old Tom Morris, then laid the final additions to create the 18-hole course in 1895, the year before Braid became a professional player.

Elie is the course on which a young James Braid learned his craft, and the town and club are still rightly proud of their golfing son. Yet walking in such illustrious footsteps as you play through these links is only a part of what makes an Elie golf tour such an exciting and truly unique experience.

Up Periscope!

Golf Periscope on 1st Hole

ven before the first tee on the Elie golf course, the sight of a 10-m tall periscope protruding from the Starter’s Office tells you you’re in for something a little different. The first drive here is blind, and the periscope, salvaged from the submarine HMS Excalibur in 1966, and donated to the club, has been used ever since to peer over the hill and ensure that any group in front are out of range before beginning play.

It’s not the only eccentricity that makes these links delightfully unusual. You’ll find no par-5s here and only a brace of par-3s (at the 3rd and 11th), yet the challenge of the other sixteen par-4 holes never becomes monotonous. Six range beyond 400yds, the twelfth being the longest, sweeping the sandy curve of the beach for 466yds, before introducing the 13th beneath the cliffs, which Braid himself dubbed “the best hole in golf”.

You’ll get splendid views onwards from the 6th, across the Firth of Forth to other equally famous golf courses near Elie such as Muirfield, North Berwick and Gullane. But don’t get too distracted. The undulating fairways of the holes here run in all directions, providing plenty of challenge on windy days.

Having played these links, another five-time Open champion, the Australian veteran Peter Thompson, declared, “If I had my way, I’d build Elies all over the world”. Most who’ve enjoyed the unique experience of playing Elie golf course would agree.
