The most northerly of Ayrshire’s abundant collection of truly noteworthy courses, Gailes is the home to the Glasgow Golf Club, founded in 1787 and the tenth oldest in the world. Club members, who’d first begun playing on Glasgow Green, decided to search for a suitable seaside plot to complement their parkland golf, and it wasn’t long before they came to Ayrshire and found this splendid plot — gladly leased to them by the Duke of Portland.
The Glasgow Gailes golf course abuts the narrow strip of the Western Gailes links, sitting just above them and a few yards further inland. As such, it has excellent links characteristics and also its own portion of heathland charm. The abundant heather and gorse here create an incredible spectacle. When in bloom, even the sea is obscured by the westerly dunes.

Links Shaped by Open Champions
These links proved hugely popular from the outset — so much so that by 1894 the Glasgow and Southwestern railway had been persuaded to build and open a station here to accommodate the numerous golf enthusiasts travelling from the city. The estimable Willie Fern (who’d won the Open Championship the year before) was commissioned to redesign the layout.
In 1912, another legendary Open winner, Willie Park Jr., teamed up with the club professional to reshape the Glasgow Gailes golf course once more. Regarding it as one of his finest creations, golfing devotees still flock to the club to enjoy links that have remained almost unchanged in the century since.
Aside from stretching the course length to 6,903 yards (from the championship tees), all else remains much as Park envisaged it. There is little elevation through these 18-holes, yet the links retain a pleasing sense of undulation, thanks partly to some intelligently raised and sunken greens. Fairways are tight with clever bunkering and combine with the natural heather to demand some clean, careful drives.
