As early as 1846, golf is described as being played here 10 miles south of St Andrews, amongst the “bents, sandhills and windlestraie” on a nine-hole course west of Mile Dyke. Doubtless, the game was being played years beforehand on this ancient piece of golfing ground that’s become Leven Links Golf Course, one of the most traditional of all Scotland’s extraordinary historic courses.
Leven Links boasts some of the purest links ground to be found anywhere globally, an entirely natural landscape created from ranked ridges of parallel dunes, left here by tides ebbing gradually further back as the sea retreated over time.
Adding to the first nine holes here, some of the oldest ever laid for play, Old Tom Morris was asked in 1868 to lay his hand lightly over more of this exceptional ground and extend the links from nine to 18 holes. Little changed until 1909, when due to high demand, the land was redivided between Leven and neighbouring Lundin Golf Club, with both clubs retaining some of the original course and extending away from each other to create two separate 18-hole courses.

Precious Links Land
So cherished is this golfing land that you’ll find two clubs still playing on the Leven Links golf course today. The Leven Golfing Society (established in 1957) and the much earlier Leven Thistle Golf Club, this older club remains recognised as one of the strongest playing clubs in Scotland. Founded in 1867, the club still takes part in the “Lindsay Shield” each April, a heavyweight match against teams from St Andrews and Carnoustie that, with origins tracing back to 1870, is thought to be the oldest running inter-club match in the world. Similarly, the Amateur Championship Gold Medal, also played here at Leven Links since 1870, lays claim to the title of the world’s oldest amateur stroke play championship.
If further evidence of the enduring quality and popularity of Leven Links Golf Course was necessary, the club has also played host to the Scottish Amateur Championship and final qualifying for the Open on six occasions.

The 18th itself is a 456-yard, par-4 beast, demanding two well-stuck shots down a narrow fairway to clear the wide, winding flow of Scoonie Burn.
