Founded in 1868, the Lundin Golf Club sits just above its equally famous neighbour Leven on the northern shores of the Firth of Forth. Indeed, for a while, both clubs shared the 18-hole, Old Tom Morris-designed links set here between their clubhouses, with each society starting play from their respective ends.
However, thanks to the exceptional quality of the links land that lies here and the burgeoning popularity of golf during the latter half of the 19th century, this single set of links was unable to cope with hosting two growing clubs. And so, in 1909, the Mile Dyke that ran the centre of the course was used as the dividing line to establish boundaries for a new pair of 18-hole courses, each retaining nine holes from the original.

Links Remade by a Scottish Master
As is often the case in separations, who got the best deal when each club forged their new course here is still a matter of some contention — although golfing devotees visiting this special part of East Scotland should enjoy the chance to play both and decide for themselves.
Leven’s expansion encompassed more dune-land, allowing the club to continue playing 18-holes of pure links golf. Lundin, meanwhile, was forced to lay their new holes through inland heath. However, the man contracted to undertake the task of remaking Lundin Golf Course was the legendary James Braid.
So successful was Braid’s reworking of the Lundin Golf Course that it has remained virtually unchanged for over a century. Braid retained the first two and last two holes from Morris’ original layout, and a round played at Lundin today packs an awful lot of golfing entertainment into a modest, 6,394-yard course.

One Excellent Hole after Another
Lundin Links golf deals out everything enthusiasts love about the game: wide-open burns and clever bunkering, blind drives and nerve-wracking out-of-bounds, bumpy fast-running ground and excellent greens.
The first five holes here are in the classic links tradition, with the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, a trio of par-4s playing close to the beach, being particularly memorable. The elevated tee at the 14th offers a wonderful view across Largo Bay from a par-3 hole that Braid himself named “Perfection”. Further along, two more par-4s, the 16th (“Trows”) and 17th (“Station”), have been used as templates and copied in courses throughout North America.
Another of Fife’s finest links, the small but perfectly formed Lundin Golf Course, has held final qualifying for the Open and annually hosts the East of Scotland Amateur Championship. It’s also good to know that any rivalry between Lundin and Levin remains friendly, as each year, the clubs congregate to play through what was the original set of 18-holes.
