To say there’s a view of the sea from every tee at the Nefyn golf course is entirely correct, yet it does little to describe the spectacle you’ll enjoy playing a round here. Many golf clubs that regularly rank in the UK’s top one hundred earn their position from a combination of the quality of their courses, coupled with the natural beauty of their surroundings. The location of the links at Nefyn Golf Club is not so much beautiful as jaw-dropping.
This is golf played in something approaching a fantasy landscape. Set upon the northern coast of the Llyn Peninsula in North Wales, the course is laid around and through a narrow wedge of rocky headland spurring into the Irish Sea. It’s a location to rival California’s Pebble Beach or Old Head in southern Ireland, and as such, Nefyn has rightly become a Welsh icon since its foundation back in 1907.
Originally nine holes, Nefyn golf course was extended by the formidable duo of J.H. Taylor and James Braid, and unsurprisingly, the layout at Nefyn is as singular as the location. After some clever recent reworking by the highly-regarded course architects Swan Golf, Nefyn now offers 27-holes set out in three distinctive nine-hole loops.

Dramatic Route
The front nine trailing the cliffs west of the headland is the Yellow Course. The back nine running behind is the Red Course, and the ‘Point’ nine over the headland is the Blue Course. Playing Red and Yellow as 18-holes constitutes the Championship Course, while the Old Course comprises playing Red and Blue together. Those who wish to devote the time to properly drink in the spectacle on a Nefyn golf break are welcome to play all twenty-seven.
This is cliff-top golf rather than pure links, but it is cliff-top golf at its finest. There are very few coastal golf courses where you get a sea view from every hole; Nefyn is one of them, and on a clear day, you’ll even spy the distant Wicklow Mountains across the waves in Ireland. Even when players tear their gaze away from the views across the water, the mighty mountains of Snowdonia still roll behind you inland to the east.

Holes with Unique Hazards
However, the lure of Nefyn golf course isn’t entirely due to its location. There are plenty of quality holes to be played here, with the second and fifth on the Championship layout receiving praise from many. All are made tougher by the constant distraction of such dramatic coastal surroundings, but it’s the stretch of the course occupying the entirety of the promontory that makes Nefyn a truly special golfing experience.
Here, with cliff-edge on either side of the fairways, you’ll find natural obstacles as unique as a “blowhole” funnelling down to the sea that serves as a hazard on the 12th (or 7th, depending on which direction you play the Old Course route). Many regulars would also recommend a brief detour here to take the short track halfway along the eastern side of the headland, leading down to the tiny beachfront village of Porthdinllaen and the notoriously good Ty Coch Inn.
