Of course, a round at Royal Birkdale is more than a round – it’s a pilgrimage through Open Championship history, having hosted golf’s oldest tournament no less than ten times to date. Every hole on the Royal Birkdale golf course follows a who’s who of famous footsteps, from Peter Thompson, the first Open winner here in 1954, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller and Tom Watson, right up to Jordan Spieth, who claimed the last Open title here in 2017.
Those who feel Royal Birkdale is getting the best of them should take a moment to visit the plaque set right of the 15th fairway. It commemorates the legendary shot Arnold Palmer took from within the bushes there, recovering to reach the green and make par. Eventually, he went on to win The Open in 1961.
