Test Yourself against the Greatest Links Players on Royal Liverpool Golf Breaks

ROYAL LIVERPOOL

The warm welcome waiting for you at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club is sure to turn those first nervous pangs, which can arrive with the thought of taking on such a historic course, into butterflies of excitement. Just as well, for you’ll be following in the footsteps of golfing giants, from Harold Hilton, who won the first Open hosted here in 1897, to modern great Rory McIlroy, the last winner in 2014.

There’s no doubt the handsome red-brick clubhouse, constructed in 1895, has stood the test of time, and amenities inside are as luxurious as you’d expect, but what of The Royal Liverpool golf course itself?

Built in 1869 on the edge of the Wirral by the shores of the Dee, the club is the second oldest in England. The seeming flatness of the course is due to it doubling as a horse-racing track for the first seven years of what has become a most distinguished life.

A View to a Thrill

The spectacular panorama afforded from the course, encompassing the estuary and Welsh hills receding gently in the distance beyond, only adds to the sense of tranquillity here. Initially, the view from the first tee appears level and benign.

Look a little closer, though, and you’ll soon understand why Tony Jacklin declared this one of the toughest opening tee shots in Open Championship golf. The 425 yards of slender dogleg fairway, flanked by the clubhouse to one side and out of bounds to the other, lets you know that a successful round at the Royal Liverpool golf course will demand accuracy and courage from the very first shot.

The shorter second hole brings players their first introduction to some of the cavernous bunkers that lie in wait here to swallow any wayward drives. Soon you’ll be left with no doubt why the Royal Liverpool has played host to The Open on 12 separate occasions, with famous recent winners here at Hoylake, including Tiger Woods in 2006 and Rory McIlroy in 2014.

A Links Course Designed in Harmony with Its Surroundings

Yet the challenge through the excellent set of links at the Royal Liverpool is always more exhilarating than intimidating. Many of the modern course’s charms and thrills can be attributed to a brilliantly sympathetic restoration by the masterful golf architect Donald Steel.

As a man dedicated to working in harmony with the environment rather than against it, Steel’s ethos centred around the art of the possible. “Making courses impossible is easy,” he once scoffed, and when asked what made a great one, declared plainly that “it should provide an interesting challenge and a fair test for every class of player, and make the best possible use of the land.”

Every hole at Royal Liverpool tells a tale

The 18 holes at the Royal Liverpool Golf Course are the perfect example of a splendid philosophy, and the most recent improvements also stay true. This includes the stunning new par 3, hole 17 of the Championship Course. Named “Little Eye” after the smallest of the Hilbre Islands just offshore and designed by Martin Ebert, it’s a short but testing hole to a small raised green with beautiful views over the estuary.

No wonder the Royal Liverpool will play host to The Open once more in 2023.
