Beat the Bunkers on a Royal Lytham Golf Break

ROYAL LYTHAM & ST. ANNES

Links Gate, Lytham St Annes, Lytham Saint Annes FY8 3LQ, England

The Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club combines one of the world’s greatest links courses with the fine hospitality you’d expect at such a historic and prestigious club. The luxurious, ensuite accommodation available in the beautiful, gabled Dormy House, is situated just yards away from the first tee. Nearby the Victorian clubhouse, another dramatic architectural icon, keeps its vigil over a mighty set of links that are generally considered the toughest on the British Open Circuit, with the exception of Carnoustie.

Step to the first tee, and you know already that you’re walking in famous footsteps at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes golf course, but you’ll soon realise that taming this monster of a links course will require standing on the shoulders of giants.

This place is one of the best courses I've played. Our caddy Mal was a great guy and very knowledgeable. We were welcomed at the front and looked after all day. Would reccomend just hope they dont cut too many trees / change the course too much for the open...

Womens British AIG

One of Golf’s Most Demanding Finishes

Aside from being the most northerly of English championship venues, not to mention hosting the Open Championship eleven times and the Ryder Cup twice, many of the game’s greatest players regard the holes here, from the fourteenth onward, as the toughest finishing stretch on the Open rota, and a Royal Lytham golf break may well prove as much.

Lying roughly half a mile inland now, Royal Lytham & St. Annes golf course may not afford the sweeping sea views of other equally prestigious British links courses. Then again, this course was never designed to afford players time to take in the scenery.

At 6,900 yards, the course is only a little over the UK average, so no great test for the biggest hitters in today’s game. Then again, hitting big has never been where the devilish thrill of playing Royal Lytham lies.

A Bunker Bonanza

The challenge here is avoiding the bunkers. From potholes you can barely place both feet in, to leviathans that’ll almost make you believe you’re on the beach, the course’s 18-holes are peppered with over two hundred of them. From the opening hole, you’ll find rings of bunkers surrounding greens that look, from a distance, like a faraway oasis in a sea of sand. Meanwhile, more bunkers flank the fairways, many of them for almost the entirety of their length.

Royal Lytham & St. Annes golf course won’t allow any player to simply ‘hit and hope’. Much of this course’s beauty lies in the chances to take on a hole from two entirely different directions. Pin-sharp accuracy, in both direction and distance, is the only way to tame these mighty links, and plotting your best strategy from the tee is essential.

Those who understand this from the outset will soon find themselves enthralled in the test from one of the greatest courses.
