When it comes to breath-taking backdrops against which to play a round of golf, the course at Royal St. David’s Golf Club is undoubtedly a contender for the finest in the world – and in terms of pure romantic drama, could easily be declared the victor.
On the shores at the edge of Snowdonia National Park, you’ll find one of the UK’s most gloriously appointed championship links courses. A fabulous golfing test, set in a location that delivers drama that would be hard to imagine were it not there before your eyes.

Taken through its full, 360° sweep, the view from the links at Royal St. David’s golf course is matchless. Huge, rippling dunes run through the course and stand sentinel about its flanks, while Harlech castle presides in full mediaeval grandeur, perched on a sheer, jutting outcrop of rock overlooking all.
To the other side of the castle sweeps the ribboned sand of The Bay of Tremadog, while behind fades the misty mauve hues of distant Snowdonia. These silhouetted mountains complete a scene that lets you know a round played at Royal St. David’s golf course is a round of golf played in a land of myth and legend.

Established in 1894, this premium, traditional links course has tested princes and prime ministers alike. Formed from the imaginations of its two founding members, the Honourable Harold Finch-Hatton (who first used the land for boomerang practice) and William Henry More, the course is regarded by most as a true golfing challenge. This is a testing ground for purists who love the demands of true links golf. The clubhouse is plush and comfortable with some excellent, recently refurbished Dormy accommodation available. Over many years, the course has firmly established itself within the ranks of the UK’s Top 50.
Running through and between some truly monstrous dunes, the links here begin reasonably flat, but there are good reasons why Royal St. David’s golf course is generally regarded as the most challenging par 69 in Britain, if not the world.
This is a strong set of holes, with the first dozen fully exposed to the prevailing westerly winds. The links at Royal St. David’s zig-zag erratically, rather than following a straightforward in-and-out. Nearly all ask for big hits and good positional play, and often you’ll be required to do both at once — as proved by the stretching brace of par 5s at the 7th and 8th.

The challenge is a glorious one. With scenery this spectacular on every side, first-time visitors to Royal St. David’s golf course may find their biggest problem is simply concentrating on the task at hand.
