Royal Troon is unique in being the only golf club in the UK to have been bestowed with royal status during the long reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Granted in 1978, it’s a well-deserved appointment. Although the club’s elevation may have helped lift it out of the shadows of its famous neighbour at Prestwick, it’s certainly not what makes playing here such a unique and exciting experience.
Prestwick may have hosted 23 Opens even before Royal Troon Golf Club held its first in 1923, but this club has undoubtedly seen some of the championship’s greatest golfing highlights played over its fairways and greens.

The most recent of these unfolded in 2016 when Henrik Stenson won his duel with Phil Mickelson in an unforgettable final round. The Swede established a new Open record by finishing 20-under-par.
Swiftly acclaimed as one of major championship golf’s greatest head-to-heads, much of the drama can be directly attributed to the quality and characteristics of the club’s Old Course. Anyone enjoying a Royal Troon golf break should relish the chance to play it.
This splendid set of links began in 1878 as a modest five holes, established by Prestwick’s Keeper of the Green, Charlie Hunter, and a group of enthusiasts in the local pub.
Today this classic out-and-back layout has all the quality, challenge, and charm you’d expect from a course that’s a regular on the Open rota, but with the addition of some excellent extra features that set the Royal Troon golf experience apart.

Arguably, you can find the most notable of these challenges at the 6th and 8th holes. The course starts with a series of short par-4s following the coastal edge of the Clyde, a relatively gentle beginning, which affords a moment to enjoy the big skies and sweeping views over to the Isle of Arran. The 6th delivers the longest par-5 in Open Championship golf — a brutal 601 yards demanding low shots and an arrow-straight line.
Soon after this, the 8th presents the satisfying contrast of being the Open’s shortest hole. Appropriately named the “Postage Stamp” after reference made by William Park to the size of the putting surface, this 123-yard par-3 demands a tee shot be made directly onto this diminutive strip of green. One of the highest regarded holes in Championship golf.
It is fitting that Royal Troon has been chosen to host the Open Championship once again in 2023, marking a century since it first held the tournament, and will no doubt offer all the excitement derived from superbly detailed links on which only the very best shot-makers will prevail. A special occasion awaits, but there’s never a bad time to take a Royal Troon golf break and enjoy this fabulous course.
