A traditional links course that is always maintained in excellent condition, West Lancashire golf course is an enduring favourite of players who relish having every aspect of their links game tested to the fullest.
Stretching along the very edge of Blundell Sands at the mouth of the Mersey just north of Liverpool, West Lancashire Golf Club was founded in 1873, making it the oldest in the county and one of the ten oldest clubs in England. Thanks to its location, deep within a rippling dune system that makes for perfect links terrain, West Lancashire comfortably retains its rank as one of the UK’s Top 100 courses.
Celebrating its auspicious 150th anniversary in 2023, West Lancashire has deep historic ties with another esteemed local club, the Royal Liverpool. In fact, the West Lancashire golf club was founded by seven Royal Liverpool members who met at the Seaforth Hotel, eager to expand the Scottish National game by bringing it across the Mersey.
Initially, membership between the two clubs was shared, with the most notable dual member being Royal Liverpool’s Harold Hilton. Winner of two Opens, four British Amateur titles and the U.S. Amateur in 1911, Hilton became West Lancashire’s first paid secretary and did much to shape the club.
