In the north of Ayrshire’s wonderfully golf-rich stretch of coast, just 45 minutes from Glasgow, lies Western Gailes Golf Club, a superb seaside course where nature and the hand of man have worked in tandem over the years to create some of Scotland’s most interesting, exciting, and challenging links.
Some are prone to describing this historical course as a “hidden gem”, but in fairness, it has not been so much hidden as obscured by proximity to the likes of Turnberry, Prestwick and Royal Troon. Furthermore, once greats of the game from the last half-century; from Gary Player and Tony Jacklin to Bubba Watson and Rory McIlroy, have all visited Western Gailes golf course to test their mettle, it becomes hard to describe the club as “undiscovered”.

The links at Western Gailes, however, are undoubtedly a treasure. This splendid strip sits between shores that look to the granite dome of Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran beyond and the Ayrshire coastal line tracks. Appropriately, this very railway brought four Glasgow golfers, sick of winters in muddy parkland, out here in 1897 to lease this plot from the Duke of Portland.
Today, the 18-holes are laid out in their quirky version of a traditional out-and-back on one of the narrowest courses you’re likely to play. They offer one of the sternest tests of links golf — one that demands skill, forethought, and just about every club in your bag.
It’s no surprise Western Gailes Golf Club hosted the PGA Championship in the 60s and the Curtis Cup in the 70s. There’s a fantastic variety of holes here to be explored and enjoyed. Fairways undulate gracefully, sometimes deceivingly, through the rippling dunes. A trio of burns cross the course, providing a more natural hazard and are often used to protect the fast-running greens, cleverly concealed within the natural folds of the terrain.

Western Gailes is a stiff golfing test, made stiffer by the prevailing westerly wind that blows across the course far more often than not. Yet under blue skies and with the purple marsh orchids flowering around you (much of the back nine is now part of a site of special scientific interest), it’s easy to forgive.
There’s challenge and beauty here in equal measure, on links that truly feel formed from human hands shaping nature with the lightest, subtlest of touches. Rather than a “hidden gem”, those who’ve played here will be more inclined to define Western Gailes golf course as one of the Ayrshire golf coast’s crowning glories.
