Founded in 1911, Hillside resides at the centre of Lancashire’s finest trio of links, three exceptional adjoining courses that comprise Royal Birkdale and Southport & Ainsdale to its north and south, all carved from the same spectacular system of dunes. A welcome as warm as you’ll find at any of the prestigious clubs of the Golf Coast awaits visitors to Hillside Golf Club. The clubhouse, which was originally built in the style of a grand Edwardian house (should the property ever need selling in the club’s earliest days), has been extensively refurbished between 2016 and 2018.

Links With a Rising Challenge
The Hillside golf course, opened here in 1923, is of great character and challenge, as the links meander through pinewoods and wind between magnificent sandhills for 7000 yards (if played from the white tees). It is, without doubt, everything a great link course should be, with the aesthetic addition of some beautiful mature trees.
Fred Hawtree was commissioned to redesign the course after funds were secured from the construction industry from the sale of 200,000 tonnes of sand from the site, and in 1967 the New Championship course was officially opened.
These are the links on which Tony Jacklin earned a dramatic victory in the 1982 PGA Championship after defeating Bernhard Langer in a playoff. Beyond this, Hillside golf course plays regular host to Final Qualifying for The Open, and with a little more scrutiny of the course, it’s easy to understand why.
Thanks to the outstanding reputation of the back nine here, much has been done over the past five years to bring the first nine holes up to the same elevated status, with huge new dune banks, sand scrapes and wetland areas all adding visual appeal while toughening the tee shots, to create a more balanced challenge over 18 holes.

The Beauty of the Back Nine
Yet it is through the back nine that Hillside still delivers what can only be described as pure ‘wow’ factor. And if professional endorsements were required, Greg Norman once took the trouble to write a letter to the club, describing them as ‘the best in Britain’, while Jack Nicklaus asserted that some of his very favourite holes were to be found here.
Elevated tees on the run for home at this Lancashire gem afford fabulous views of both the Lake District and the distant peaks of Snowdonia. These holes, however, demand you concentrate on your more immediate surroundings. Corridor fairways with the drama of canyons on the 11th and 17th (a superb pair of par 5s) wind through some of the tallest and wildest dunes you’ll find on a links course anywhere. All lead to exciting greens that, from a distance, look clad in velvet.
For some, playing well the Hillside golf links becomes a near-religious experience – for most, it will lift a golfer’s confidence in a way few other courses can.
