In 1906 a mixed group of card players from a whist club called the Grosvenor, decided to form a golf club bearing the same name. Initially playing at nine-hole course in Birkdale while suitable land was found for their own links. When it was, the professional at nearby Royal Lytham, George Lowe, was paid a handsome ten guineas to design a course here at the Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club.
James Braid, arguably the greatest ever golf course revisionist, set his hand to remodelling the links here between 1922 and 1924, creating a course comprising six entirely new holes and twelve brilliantly revived.
A favourite Ryder Cup venue during the 1930s, host of the Ladies Open in 1979, the British Amateur Championships in 1984 and 2005, and numerous Open final qualifying matches, Southport & Ainsdale is a historic club boasting a course that’s a must-play for many golf-lovers, and links enthusiasts in particular.

Links at the Centre of a Golfing Heartland
Situated little more than a tee shot south of both Hillside Golf Club and the Royal Birkdale, the club is at the heart of a playground for serious enthusiasts, where you’ll find famous championship links courses separated from each other by a single ridge of dunes.

For golfers of all proficiencies, Southport & Ainsdale offers a challenge that entertains just as much as it tests. These links were designed in 1925 by five-time Open champion James Braid, and although it remains largely unchanged, refinements to enhance the links have continued right up to 2019, when the configuration of the 17th green was improved by golf architect Marc Westenborg, since when work has continued to remove all the gravel paths and replace them with grass, along with significant and successful drainage work across the course.

A Course Offering Natural Challenge
The links here have a wonderfully natural feel, twisting and turning around each other, as they thread through handsome dunes between clumps of gorse and heather, and coppices of well-established pines. All of which provide the coastal charm you dream of finding at a classic links course, not to mention adding to the technical challenges of play (the fescue grasses on the dunes provide a tough rough to recover from).
There’s an equal number of memorable holes spread over the front and back nine, the most famous being the par-5 16th called Gumbleys (after founding member Hobart Gumbley), where the second shot must be played blind over a large, sleepered bunker.
Southport & Ainsdale links make the best of their dunes with some excellent raised tees and plateau greens, and a new dune complex has been added to the right of the 18th, with many new teeing grounds and some great work at the par-3 8th.
