Historic Links in Seaside Splendour
Unsurprisingly for this special part of the world, golf has been played here for centuries, with a rudimentary version beginning on a strip of common ground in 1611. Local landowners donated land they could find no better use for, and gradually the links expanded westwards to create the course enjoyed today. Contributors who’ve helped nature sculpt these excellent 18 holes over the last two hundred years make a roll-call of Scotland’s great golfing renaissance men, including Tom Dunn, Davie Strath and Ben Sayers.
Founded in 1832, the earliest members of North Berwick Golf Club must have been a hardy breed, for it wasn’t until 1879 that the question of acquiring a proper clubhouse arose. Up to that point, members had met and held events in a marquee at the side of the course. Today the old stone clubhouse brings shelter and a warm welcome. Its bar and lounge, named after North Berwick’s most famous current member (and one of the biggest names in women’s golf), Catriona Matthews, offers first-class hospitality with matching views.
