Before even taking to the tee, the approach to the Royal Portrush Golf Club is enough to have many golfing enthusiasts positively palpitating with excitement. Follow the sublime winding coast road, and suddenly those famous links appear before you, laid out in all their undulating glory.
The UK and Ireland are both graced with plenty of links golf courses offering fair challenge in a beautiful setting. Yet only a rare few generate a sense from their surroundings best described as pure charisma. Nestled in a triangle of dunes by limestone cliffs, on which the ruins of Dunluce castle perch, and with the Giant’s Causeway, the hills of Donegal, the Skerries Islands and distant Scotland all inhabiting the view, Royal Portrush Golf Club is undoubtedly one of that hallowed few.
It’s fair to say the club here has evolved considerably since the first 9-hole course was established in 1888 at what was then known as the County Club. The biggest transformation to the links occurred in 1932, when the full 18-holes were redesigned by master golf architect Harry Colt.

36 Holes of Sheer Splendour
Today Royal Portrush offers spectacular golf over 36-holes, comprising the Dunluce Links and its sister course, the Valley Links. A regular member of the UK’s Top 10 course, the Dunluce course is simply one of the world’s best.
No wonder Royal Portrush is the only venue to have hosted the Open outside England and Scotland, and it’s held it twice, once in 1951 (when Max Faulkner lifted the claret jug), then again in 2019. Before welcoming The Open for a second time, further improvements were made to Dunluce Links in 2015, with two brand-new holes here designed by Martin Ebert.
Global coverage of the 2019 Open allowed a worldwide audience to revel in the thrills, charms, drama, and majesty of Royal Portrush golf, much to the delight of 2011 Open winner and proud local, Darren Clarke. After the success of 2019, it’s probably no coincidence the venue has been chosen to host the 153rd Open in 2025.

Sheltered behind dunes more like sandy cliffs, in a patch known as the War Hollow, the Valley Links are notable for having no more bunkers than holes. This is thanks to their challenge being brilliantly sculpted from the natural hazards to be found en-route to a series of small, cleverly positioned greens.
