An Excellent Course Too Often Overlooked
These are glorious links. The calibre of the holes found here and the test they offer is no less exacting than those to be found at their famous neighbours along the way. Inaugurated in 1901, the original 9-hole course was laid to the western end of the present plot. In 1908 the renowned Scotsman Ben Sayer was commissioned to create an 18-hole course and in 1929, the estimable Harry Colt was asked to perfect many of the greens.
Today, Castlerock golf course provides 27-holes of classic links entertainment, encompassing the 18-hole Mussenden course and the more modest 9-hole Bann, the 5th hole of which was recently declared “one of the most scenic holes in Irish golf”. With its looping front nine, the Mussenden course, entirely embracing the centrally placed homeward holes, underwent more recent alteration in 2017/18, with Martin Hawtree, from the renowned dynasty of golf architects, making improvements to six holes here.

Be prepared. A round at Castlerock golf course will test every aspect of your game and those that stray or don’t quite make the distance will find the rough here punishing. Throughout the year, this course can be found in immaculate condition. Greens are firm and fast, even in winter and those with a strong short game will fare better here. The best-known hole is probably the 4th, a scenic par-3 known as the “Leg O’ Mutton”, which asks you to play your tee shot over a diagonally running burn to a raised green, with “out of bounds” on both sides down the hole’s full 200-yards.
Hospitality in the cosy clubhouse has a reputation for being especially friendly and generous — comfort for those who fare less well among these giant dunes. Castlerock itself is a seashore village that has catered to visiting golfers since the 1930s.
