This is wonderful, wild and wide-open seashore. The latter-day legend of Irish golf architecture, Eddie Hackett, seems to have used every square foot of this rumpled, rugged dunes system — almost all that comprises the Murvagh peninsula — to create a beautiful beast of a course. Big Links for Bold Golfers
Reached via a narrow, forested avenue flanked both sides by water, the course opened for play in 1973 and has been beguiling visiting links enthusiasts ever since. Sitting atop 180 acres, this links, a par-73 reaching a truly formidable 7,556 yards from its back tees, is generally regarded as one of Hackett’s finest creations.
They’re certainly one of his mightiest and have further benefited more recently from thoughtful updating during the 90s by the talented Pat Ruddy, who worked on a total of eleven holes here, creating new greens, tees, and bunkering, and even cutting a valley through one of the dune hills.
Donegal golf course now presents one of the strongest tests of golf to be found anywhere on the isle. Yet, big as they are, the 18-holes here are a golfing challenge that requires brain as much as brawn, creating an exciting contest where the shrewd golfer stands as much chance of success as the biggest hitters.

Nevertheless, this course tees off with a par-5 and you’ll find a further four here at the 6th, 8th, 12th, and 14th holes. Of these, the 12th is the longest and a brute of just under 600-yards, but steel yourself for another stern test at the 249-yard par-3 16th.
Donegal golf course may be long, but it does deliver fewer drastic changes in elevations than many of the excellent links courses dotted around the coast of western Ireland. The word “Murvagh” means “low lying”, and you’ll find yourself playing a more level course with fewer blind shots than on others found along the Wild Atlantic Way.
