Play a ‘Last Links Masterpiece’ at Carne Golf Club

CARNE

Carne, Belmullet, Co. Mayo

Over a solo career spanning from 1967 to 1993, Eddie Hackett, “the grandfather of Irish golf architecture”, designed over 100 golf courses around the country. A man who revered nature and the landscapes he worked with, a minimalist before the term was even recognised, Hackett always made the best of what was set before him, coaxing a course from its surroundings rather than bending the land to his will with an army of bulldozers.

Much of Hackett’s finest work is set about the startling coastal geography of western Ireland, where you’ll find the superbly appointed Carne golf course laid in lonely beauty on the Atlantic edge of County Mayo.

The Perfect Swan Song

Not just a wonderful Eddie Hackett links; Carne golf course is the great man’s grand farewell. As many links enthusiasts will attest, he saved the best of his illustrious career for last, delivering a major links masterpiece here on the sandy shore of the rugged Belmullet peninsula.

Even Hackett himself ventured that Carne golf course had the potential to become the country’s finest links, and his prediction was no idle boast. On visiting this wonderful muscular dune system, it’s hard to believe this links only opened for play in 1993, for they already look and feel as if they could have sat here for a century; with their naturally sited greens and tees set through dunes brimming with harebells and green fritillaries, providing a conservation area for rare frogs, snails and butterflies.

The eighteen-hole Hackett Course lays its hand on the land so lightly as to barely graze it, yet again demonstrating its designer’s gift for routing, as this marvellous dune-scape takes players on a golfing adventure through holes that lead from one extraordinary, sandy-banked amphitheatre to the next.

A Legacy Superbly Extended

Better yet, a further 9-holes were sculpted from this monumental dune system in 2013 by the equally talented Ally McIntosh. This is now known as the Kilmore course and is already widely regarded as the best 9-holes of links in Ireland. They can be played alone or together with the front nine of the Hackett course, creating a routing known (for obvious reasons) as Wild Atlantic Dunes, which in terms of scale, thrill and challenge, easily rivals Ballybunion.

In 2021, the overall excellence of these 27 holes was officially recognised when Carne Golf Club was chosen to host the Irish PGA Championship. Hackett’s prophecy is well on its way to coming true.
