Enniscrone is set between ocean and estuary with water on three sides, laid through some of the largest dunes found in Ireland. With the Ox Mountains framing the view to one side, the Nephin Beg range to the other, and beyond, three miles of pristine sand constitute one of the country’s most beautiful beaches. No wonder so many links enthusiasts fall in love with the Enniscrone golf course at first sight, and so many more would love to keep it a secret.
Here at the estuary mouth, on the Sligo side of the River Moy — which forms the natural border with neighbouring county Mayo — can be found one of Ireland’s most enchanting links, laid across a promontory jutting into Killala Bay, where as many visitors come to surf as play golf.

Rising Out of the Sands
The club began here in 1918 with a modest nine-hole course, but today this vast, tumbling system of dunes is used to its full potential after Eddie Hackett expanded the course to 18-holes in 1974. Donald Steele extended the course again by a further nine while also reshaping some of the flatter opening holes to create the thrilling 27-holes now offered at Enniscrone golf course.
To say the surroundings are photogenic would be an understatement. Yet, you’ll need to concentrate entirely on the task at hand to succeed at Enniscrone, and you’ll frequently find the view obscured by dunes so giant the local children often sledge down them.
Enniscrone golf course can be played in several permutations, with the original 18-holes fittingly known as “Dunes” and Steele’s further nine as “Scurmore”. Together they present a golfing delight, and a serious challenge, with Steele’s addition arguably even more testing than Hackett’s original course.
