Dooks Golf Club is a haven for all links enthusiasts, but for those who love to tour the hallowed historic links laid out by legendary golf architects such as Old Tom Morris, James Braid and Harry Colt, a visit to Dooks is highly recommended for somewhat different reasons.
Cupped in the breath-taking crescent of Dingle Bay, Dooks is one of Ireland’s oldest golf clubs. It is one of Kerry’s golfing jewels, voted the country’s most scenic golf links as recently as 2020 — and wouldn’t be here at all if it wasn’t for the single-minded dedication of its members.

A Club Saved by Devoted Golfers
Above all, Dooks golf course is an amazing testament to what can be achieved by golf devotees lacking budget and initial expertise but brimming with passion and determination. The club was first established in 1889 by officers of the Royal Horse Artillery, who laid out a short 9-hole course on this beautiful coastal peninsula. Over the ensuing decades, the club’s fortunes ebbed.
The links were extended to 18-holes in 1900, then, due to escalating costs, reverted to nine again shortly after. However, it was in 1963 that Dooks received a bombshell — in the form of a letter requesting the club hand back the land it was on, as the original lease hadn’t actually been signed.
It would have been the end — had the members not embarked on a nationwide publicity campaign, one which eventually raised the funds to purchase ownership in 1965. Their efforts also bestowed the links with national celebrity status, but the huge increase in profile and popularity meant expanding the course to 18-holes again became a must.

Spectacular Links Sculpted on a Shoestring
Unfortunately, funds for such a major undertaking had been spent purchasing the ground. Undeterred, the members divided into nine separate teams, and with a shoestring budget of £3000, they created the extra holes themselves.
In 1970 the Dooks Golf Club reopened as an 18-hole course, and the welcome was rapturous. With guidance from “the father of Irish golf course design”, Eddie Hackett, the members of Dooks had created nine further holes that blend seamlessly with the originals, now forming one of the most natural and beautiful links experiences Ireland has to offer.
Dooks golf course has a magic all of its own. Its location on the Wild Atlantic Way is sublime, set south in Dingle Bay, surrounded by sea on three sides, in sight of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountains and the sandy peninsulas of Inch Point and Rossbehy.
The vista is simply stunning, the course a true links test — but above all, it’s a testament to just what can be achieved with nothing more than sheer resolve and a love of golf.
