Play Some of the World’s Most Breathtaking Golf at Old Head of Kinsale

OLD HEAD

Downmacpatrick, Kinsale, Co. Cork

Over the past two thousand years, the piece of land known as the Old Head of Kinsale has been claimed by Celts, Vikings and Normans. Today, it belongs exclusively to golf.

This extraordinary headland peninsula, spurring out into the Celtic Sea for a full two miles, can be found an hour’s drive south of the city of Cork and regularly leaves visitors in a condition of dumbstruck awe.

This is world-famous, world-class golf at the world’s end. When you look out over the sheer 300ft cliffs and listen to the waves echo in the sea caves below, it’s easy and entirely appropriate to compare Old Head to Pebble Beach — regrown as an Irish sea monster surging up from the water.

A Modern Legend

Opened for play only as recently as 1997, Old Head golf course may not have the history or heritage of iconic links courses on the southern Irish seashore, such as Ballybunion or Waterville. Yet, it has already become a legendary destination, renowned across the globe, a testament to the unique quality of the golfing experience offered here.

Frankly, everybody who loves coastal golf should pay the green fees and play the Old Head golf course at least once — unless they suffer from vertigo. This is as close as golf gets to pure adrenaline sport, with the club reached via a causeway strip no wider than 200 yards, opening onto a diamond-shaped headland, a lighthouse perched precariously at the farthest tip. The rest of this phenomenal space is occupied entirely by 18-holes, an excellent practice area, and the clubhouse.

Golf on the Edge of Everything

The brainchild of brothers John and Patrick O’Connor, the facilities at Old Head are of the highest quality, offering fine dining, luxury accommodation and even a spa. Safe to say, all enjoy the most stunning sea views. But it’s the course that’s the star, and the course here is in a league of its own.

Laid over 220 acres, half of the holes (the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th,17th and 18th) on this par-72, 7,100-yard rollercoaster, play around the perimeter along the cliff’s edge. The 12th is widely regarded as one of the toughest and most outrageous holes in all of golf. Arguably, Old Head’s signature hole, “Courcean Stage”, is a par-5 occupying the isthmus, with a sheer drop on both sides and a dogleg that asks you to launch across cliffs from the tee — to find land again further up the fairway.

Beyond the 12th, almost every yard here will make you gasp. Bring extra balls (and courage), then revel in one of the world’s most sought-after and singular golfing experiences — for Old Head golf course stands, quite literally, out there on its own.
