But however labour was divided while building this exceptional 18-hole links course; it’s fair to say that combining the man many consider golf’s first true global superstar and the stunning natural landscape of the Kerry coast was a potent combination.
The southern Irish county of Kerry has been historically dubbed the “Lake District of Ireland”, impressive in a country with a global reputation for its stunning scenery. Indeed the links at Tralee Golf Club look as if they could have resided within this startlingly beautiful stretch of coast since 1884, rather than 1984 when the course first opened.

Palmer’s Perfect Place
Palmer had been waiting a while for the chance to try his hand at designing a links course in Ireland. Some might argue that it would be hard for anyone to fail to sculpt good links from such a spectacular stretch of land between Carrahane Strand and Fenit Island, twenty-two miles south of Ballybunion.
Palmer, however, was far from your average golfer; thus, the links he forged here are far from run-of-the-mill seaside golf. This is the coastline where David Lean filmed Ryan’s Daughter, a place of sweeping sand, craggy shores, towering dunes and even a 12th-century watchtower. All are encompassed in the wonderful vistas here, bringing many of them into play.

Drama in Two Distinct Nines
Captivating from the first tee, these links hold the attention and demand concentration until the very last putt. Palmer has not simply laid out a course through prime links land but choreographed a course that offers a variety of challenges and a stern but thrilling test.
The dream layout created by the King marries links and cliff-top golf in two highly distinctive and contrasting nines. The front set, although more level, runs the cliffs, with drama and jeopardy coming early at the 2nd, which doglegs sharply about the cliff edge, running to the 3rd, a par-3 set treacherously close to the rocky shore.
For many though, the drama begins as the back nine weaves into the massive dune system. Here you’ll find holes such as the fearsome 13th, a par-3 that requires you to clear a yawning chasm to reach the green, but without going long.
