Enjoy a True “Links Adventure” at Lahinch Golf Course

LAHINCH

Dough, Lahinch, Co. Clare

Within and around the broad dunes that roll to the shores of soft green Country Clare, just at the spot where the Inagh River empties itself into the Atlantic, you will find the fantastic Lahinch golf course

This is a links that many experienced players regard not so much a “hidden gem” as an overlooked masterpiece, one which (while not quite equal in layout) is every bit as entertaining as Irish leviathans such as Royal County Down and Portrush.

Golf began here back in 1892, and the excellence of the Lahinch golf course today can be attributed to three main influences. First came Old Tom Morris, commissioned to improve the initial offering in 1894 and to declare Lahinch the finest natural links course he’d seen. Next to take a turn sculpting Lahinch was Dr Alister McKenzie, whose chief contribution was to bestow the course with some fabulously devious and undulating multi-tiered greens.

Links Returned to Their Former Glory

However, even while McKenzie moved on to design Augusta, the greens at Lahinch were being levelled back out, the club deeming them too tricky for regular players. Gladly, at the turn of this century, Martin Hawtree was contracted to embark upon their restoration, and thanks to his expertise, Lahinch golf course is now returned to its heyday.

This is a very fine course in a very fine setting, a links that effortlessly transforms the traditional out-and-back layout into a true golfing adventure.

A Course That Can’t Help Make You Smile

Lungs bursting with fresh air and loping over the undulating dunes, most golfers you’ll meet during a round here will be wearing the same permanent grin, an unavoidable by-product of 18-holes brimming with character, variety, and surprise.

Some great holes await at Lahinch, and they’re some of the quirkiest you’ll find in top-flight golf. Every player will have their favourites here, but all can generally agree upon the 4th, a downhill par-5 with a massive dune to clear halfway along, and the par-3 5th, one of several blind holes and featuring a narrow green almost completely encircled by towering dunes. Both are signature works from Old Tom Morris, and the 5th remains unchanged since the great man laid it.

Yet despite its many surprises, Lahinch golf course always presents a fair test, ready to be enjoyed by all players, and designed to make a golfer think carefully about shot-making rather than punish them too harshly for their mistakes.

Having finally hosted an Irish Open in 2019, it seems Lahinch’s reputation is on the rise, and these links should be visited at the earliest possible convenience.
