The charming village of Waterville profoundly deserves its name, residing as it does on a narrow belt of ground between the Atlantic Ocean and the shores of Lough Currane — the island-dotted lake that empties into the bay.
It’s another stretch of coastal Kerry so utterly infused with drama and beauty that it becomes almost futile to describe. It’s also where you’ll find one of Ireland’s finest sets of links, voted the Best Course in Ireland at the World Golf Awards as recently as 2014.
Waterville Golf Links occupy the entirety of a dune system spurring northwest along Ballinskelligs Bay to create a peninsula with sandy beaches and sea on three sides. Even by southwest Ireland’s elevated standards, it’s a spectacular piece of shore surrounding a pocket of land that almost looks as if it was created by a higher power specifically for playing links golf.

Waterville Welcomes Golfing Legends
Little wonder then that golf has been played here since 1889, and no surprise either that Waterville has seen some rather famous faces over the years. Charlie Chaplin came here for the trout fishing, Tiger Woods came to test the Waterville golf links — and promptly became a club member. Mark O’Meara and Payne Stewart played these links to warm up for The Open, while Tom Watson simply declared, “Waterville possesses the best par-three holes I have ever encountered on the same golf course.” All of which is a fair indication that the golf offering at Waterville is something very special indeed.
With such credentials, it’s fortunate that these links weren’t made to disappoint, even though golf here got off to a shaky start. Beginning with a modest 9-hole course, the club folded in the 1950s, only to be resurrected in spectacular style in the 60s, having been purchased by the Irish-American industrialist “Jack” Mulcahy.

Links Remade as “A Masterpiece”
Mulcahy immediately commissioned Eddie Hackett, one of Ireland’s most talented and prolific golf architects, to create an 18-hole links that many consider one of his masterpieces. Sensitively and smartly updated by another skilled golf designer, Tom Fazio, today the links offer a challenge almost unrivalled in its unique and complex beauty.
The courses’ natural undulations are a wonder of their own, the front nine starting fairly level before the back lead players through meandering avenues of high dunes. Tom Watson had it right about the par-3 holes here, and many feel just the same about the course’s three par-5s.
